But sony market it as a media player that can play mp4's, this was true and is now not I have over of my dvd's ripped to mp4 im pretty sure other people have way more than me , and I refuse to go through again converting them to a format just because sony cant fix something. I've found a workaround for this. If you stream your media with ps3 media server, you can force it to transcode mp4s and it plays flawlessly even at high bitrates this does, however, use some processor power. In the "transcoding settings" tab, under "misc options" type "mp4" in the box beside "force transcode for following extensions".

Stream from PC to PS-3 - no stuttering works perfect. Stream from Qnap to PS-3 same file! I'm running v2. My next step is to plug the PS3 and Qnap back to back but I just wondered if anyone has it working could post their setup.
